Thanks for a Successful Brent Gala: Thanks to everyone for an amazing Spring Gala on Saturday night! We broke all previous Taste of the Hill fundraising records and had a wonderful time. So many members of the Brent community worked together to make the evening a success, including everyone who helped with class baskets and auction items, bought auction items, attended the event, or donated tickets for teachers – we raised enough money to cover tickets for all teachers and staff who wanted to attend the Gala. Thanks, too, to the restaurants and the Capitol Hill community for their donations and time (and delicious food and wine!) and to all of the students who helped sell raffle tickets. The top student seller was Andrew Timberg. Congratulations! Thanks to the teachers who helped put together the class baskets and the art work. And a very special thanks to Chris Floyd, Felicia Clark and the Gala committee, who worked so hard to create a successful event for our school (the Gala committee wrap-up meeting will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.). A note from the Brent staff: The Brent staff would like to thank the Gala committee for putting on such an amazing event. It was a memorable night that quickly has become one that the Brent staff looks forward to each year. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication!

Help at Brent’s Spring Gardening Day: Help Brent’s gardens continue to look beautiful! Please join us at the Spring Family Gardening Day, this Saturday April 24 from 9 a.m. to noon. We’ll have some breakfast food, pizza for lunch, and crafts for the kids who don’t want to get dirty. This is a great way to enjoy a spring morning outside and work on some fun projects in the gardens. We welcome everyone’s help!

Brent Track Team: Brent’s talented track team competed in its second track meet at Spingarn High School last week (see photos). Thirty Brent students in grades 3-5 competed in the shot put, 100m hurdles and the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1600m individual events. The students did a great job! Brent’s next track meet will be on May 5 at Anacostia High School.

Goodbye from Coach Sarah: A message from Coach Sarah: Tuesday April 27, 2010, will be my last day at Brent as I am moving to Atlanta, Georgia, to pursue other professional opportunities. The past two years that I’ve spent at Brent have been amazing. You and your children have changed my life and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with them. Please feel free to keep in touch with me at sarahprewitt@hotmail.com. Thank you for all of your support! –Coach Sarah

Good Luck on the DC-CAS: After working so hard to prepare, Brent’s students in grades 3-5 will be taking the DC-CAS tests this week. On Monday, they received their signing bonuses and their Brent Star Bear college class of 2021, 2022, and 2023 t-shirts and posted their promises in the front hallway. Be sure to get a good night sleep and start the day with a healthy breakfast to help you do your best work this week!

Work Together to Protect Students: An intruder breached security at the school on Monday with no harm done, but we are evaluating our security protocols to ensure that this does not happen again. Effective as of today, the school’s back doors (the D Street entrance) will remain locked from 8:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the gates to our playground secured by combination locks. Between those times, families and visitors must enter through the North Carolina entrance by Officer Howell. We look forward to working together to protect the safety of Brent students. We thank you for your understanding and your cooperation in this very serious matter.

Auditions for the School Play: Join the cast of Brent’s second annual school play, The Wizard of Oz! We’re looking for a cast of about 25 to 30 talented Brent students who are serious about learning their lines, singing and dancing, and acting. Auditions will be held on Wednesday April 28 and Thursday April 29 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. and the cast will be announced on Friday April 30. Rehearsals will begin on Monday May 3 and continue until the performance on Thursday June 10. This is going to be even more of a success than last year’s play, so we need full commitment both on the part of the students and parents who are involved. We have a short time to put on a great production! We will also have a lot of fun. See Ms. Homayoun for more information.

Hand in Enrollment Forms – Sign Up for Next Year’s Seat: If you haven’t completed your enrollment forms yet, please turn them in to Brent’s main office ASAP. If you did not receive an enrollment form in the mail, please stop by the main office and pick up an enrollment packet. Thanks to all of the families who have already turned in their forms, which helps to ensure that every class is the “right” size. Everyone who hands in their enrollment forms and shows their proof of residency at the Brent office by May 1 will be entered in a raffle to win Nationals tickets or an in-studio professional photography session for your family. If you have any questions, please contact Denise Diggs at denise.diggs@verizon.net or (202) 355-5830.

All parents, guardians and grandparents are welcome – you don’t need to have a child in that class to help. Contact densie.diggs@verizon.net if you can help.
