PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Principal Young introduced his overall academic plan for 2013-2014 school year at the Brent PTA meeting on April 17, 2012.  Below is the slide presentation.  Please contact Principal Young with any questions you might have.  A follow-up meeting is currently being scheduled to allow for more time and discussion and that date will be announced on the Brent calendar and in TuesNews.

End of October October has brought us a change of season, from the warm of summer to some cool, fall days. The students and staff were amazing during the Book Character parade on October 31st, thanks to everyone for their support. Speaking of character, Brent’s teachers are all working students on what it means to be ”bucket fillers.” Based on the books, Have you Filled a Bucket Today and How Full is Your Bucket, our staff has been reading the books and discussing this with their students. Ask your student what it means to be a “bucket filler.”

As I walk the hallways of Brent, I continue to be impressed with the extremely high level of teaching and learning that occurs here. Teachers and support staff are meeting the needs of our students and extending their learning. Students have the opportunity on a daily basis to engage in meaningful, rich discussions with their classmates around what they’re learning. Whether they’re discussing what materials a magnet attracts, to a shape’s attributes, to meaningful dialogue in reading and writing, students are engaged with the material and each other.

We have reached the conclusion of the first quarter and are well on our way into the second! Keep supporting your learner at home by looking at their assignment notebook on a nightly basis and maintaining lines of communication open with their classroom teacher. Thanks to all the staff, parents, and students for their continued support of Ms. Maslin, her husband TC and their family. This first quarter has reminded me that the Brent community is a very special place and I am extremely lucky to be the school’s principal. As always, should you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at school, 202-698-3363, or by e-mail, peter.young@dc.gov.

Wow! The beginning of school has been wonderful! The first day of school, August 27nd, which seems so long ago, got us started off on the right foot. Staff, students and families were energized for the new school year. Staff members, adorned in their brightly covered vests, greeted students as they arrived to school.  [Read More]

Peter YoungHello Brent Families! I hope your summer has been a restful, enjoyable one! I was fortunate to participate, along with my wife (who is a  World History High School teacher at Washington-Lee HS in Arlington, VA) as a member of a U.S. Education Delegation that traveled to Beijing and Shanghai to visit a Chinese school, and to learn about their culture and history. It was hot, but we loved it and look forward to returning one day. As I sit here today, many things pop into my brain that [Read More]
