Ms. Amjad, 1st grade teacher

Khadija Amjad graduated cum laude from George Washington University with a bachelor’s of science degree in public health. She joined Teach for America in 2006 and was part of their first early childhood cohort, then received her master’s of education degree from George Mason University in 2008. Ms. Amjad will be starting her fifth year of teaching at Brent and also served as the vice president of the Brent PTA and the mentor teacher for our exchange teacher from China. “I continue working at Brent because we have an amazing collaborative learning community, which has contributed greatly to my growth as an educator,” she says. Ms. Amjad enjoys biking, has traveled to Pakistan, Spain, England, and Saudi Arabia, and was married in May. She is also a content seminar leader for the D.C. Teaching Fellows and will be formally training and supporting fellows during their first year of teaching.

Mrs. O’Rourke, 1st grade teacher

Michelle A. O’Rourke  graduated from the University of Massachusetts- Dartmouth in 2005 with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology.  In December 2007, she completed the University of Massachusetts Elementary Education Post-Baccalaureate Program.  Since this time, she has served in numerous teaching positions before coming to Brent last year.  During the 2009-2010 school year, Ms. O’Rourke served as Brent’s Instructional Aide for First Grade where she assisted and co-taught twenty-three first grade students.  At Brent she also served as a trained BURST Instructor, which included leading a reading intervention program and instructing small groups of first grade students using this reading skills focused program.  Ms. O’Rourke grew up in Massachusetts and is a self described New Englander – she enjoys the beach, snowboarding, baking, time with family and her husband and she “loves being an elementary school teacher at Brent.”   She hopes to begin her Masters in Education within the coming year.
