Welcome to school year 2024-2025!
This year promises to be a historic one, the last of over 60 years in the current building as we plan for a future in a modernized space. Even as we build this future together, we will also focus on the urgency of student growth, tightening our instructional practices analyzing data to identify individual goals and pursuing those goals through regular and targeted small group instruction. Our operating principles and student-facing values will anchor our decisions in a set of community beliefs that sustain across spaces and situations. This year we will welcome over 426 students, 325 families, and 72 faculty members and we will remember that, far bigger than our school’s location and even our goals for the year, our people make the school.
The Summer Mailing that follows is a launch point, the first of a series of communications intended to orient our families to the school year. We publish the summer mailing electronically here, with hard copies available in the main office or by mail upon request. In addition to this letter, the Summer Mailing includes:

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Welcome Letter and Volunteer Information

Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) Welcome Letter
The LSAT’s elected members and mission as an advisory group to the Brent administration, particularly in the areas of strategic planning, budget, and policy.
Equity and Inclusion Dialogue Group
The group that works to advance Brent’s commitment to cultivating an equitable and inclusive community, where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging and ways to participate.
The SIT is made up of faculty, caregivers, and community representatives, engaging with DCPS to plan our modernization process. Timelines and current information about swing space are also included.
School Supply and Activities Fee
The QR code to pay the activities fee that allow us to purchase at scale and to the needs of classrooms (no school supply shopping necessary!) and to plan field trips throughout the school year. Families who qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch are excused from these fees. Families with other financial considerations should contact norah.lycknelk@k12.dc.gov. Students will not be excluded from supply or field trip access under any circumstances.

The key events for the first term centered around events that build relationships and community. The First Term Brent Calendar is designed as a quick reference and accompanies the google calendar and monthly calendar that will be published each week in Tues News. Moving forward, printed term calendars for the remaining three terms will be sent home with report cards.
Before and After Care Programming and Enrollment
The enrollment process for Before and After Care Programming through our providers CLS (Full-Time After Care and Spanish Classes) and Flex Academies (Before Care and Enrichment Classes). Enrichment class offerings will be sent after the start of the school year, as that portion of the program begins in October.
